InspirationDuring the Chosǒn Dynasty, ink brush paintings of the four “noble plants” were popular with the Korean literati. They symbolized traditional Confucian values, while also suggesting the seasons and passage of time. Bamboo, always green, even in winter, bends without breaking and symbolizes loyalty and fidelity. The plum tree flowers before the snows melt and signals the coming of spring. The orchid evokes a world of beauty, and fragile, delicate harmony in the summer. Chrysanthemums bloom in late autumn.
The artist I wanted to use for this artwork was " 선생님" (korean translation of my teacher) at MIAD. She has been creating this specific artwork for 41 years and is infamous in Korea. Her artwork mainly correlates around nature and depicting things within her culture. It takes a certain skill to create this and a steady hand. I wanted to do a piece based off this specific art style because of the fact that it is very different from the style of art I tend to go towards. I was intrigued |

Similarities- Bamboo leaves are similar in size
- Gradation made in the bamboo stalk - The leaves are only one gradation, a dark black - |
Differences- There is an extra bunch of bamboo leaves
- The bamboo stick made by 선생님 was placed in the far right - The ink painting I did had a thin bamboo stalk and a thick bamboo stalk - The leaves in 선생님's artwork are closer together |
